Lets Talk Projects
Hey All,
Hackathonukah is in a month or so and we'd love to start hearing from you about what types of projects you're interested in. Hopefully those who are planning on attending can start to form prospective teams by learning what interests your fellow hackathonukah goers.
Some of the hardware you'll have at your disposal: SmartThings sensors and hubs, LIFX smart bulbs, Thalmic Myo EMG armbands, personal iOS/Android devices, etc.
Stay tuned for some updated info as we finalize potential hardware sponsorships!

To get this going: I would love to see someone take a data source off the web (maybe from the twitter API) and map the mood of the internet to a colored Smartbulb.

can you manipulate the brightness of the bulb? e.g. the more people "hit" your menorah - the brighter it gets - perhaps a decay as well - so over time it dims again (and part of the data could be the night of chanukah - so it knows how many of the bulbs to increment (or you can just assume the correct day)

Bulb brightness is definitely a programmable property. Not sure what you mean by "hit?" Do you mean sensing how many people are viewing the bulbs? That would be a cool hack to modify the lighting based on room occupancy or number of people in the vicinity (foursquare API?)

I think it would be pretty cool to put together some kind of game where Myo's or Muse's are used to manipulate the color and/or brightness of a light (or series of lights) with someone else remotely trying to compete against you. Something like this, maybe?

What about making a musical instrument with a unique form of input, such as through the Muse headband, Myo, Kinect, ultrasonic sensors, that not only can output sound, but also a light show around your home, where the color and intensity of the lights are influenced by the tone and pitch of the music.

I like the idea of creating musical instruments!
Here's another one: Smart Things platform is used to connect a spark Menorah to a temperature sensor that when you put near fire lights up the LED's.

Wouldn't you have to worry about getting wax everywhere? :-P

I'd like to make a mood mirror. The plan is to take a mirror and attach a camera (laptop? kinect?) and a few color-controllable light bulbs. Do facial and mood detection with camera and then program lights to match.

That sounds really cool! I don't know if we'll be able to provide mirrors though :-P. You might also want to try to use color to improve people's moods, maybe making them "happier" if people seem sad... not sure that makes sense though.

Thanks Orenyk,
I think inverting the lighting makes a lot of sense. I'll drop by home depot before to pick up a mirror. Should I also pick up light bulb sockets?

We'll be providing some lamp bases for the LIFX bulbs and some regular incandescents; the Hue dev kits are self-packaged so they don't need sockets (I think). If you want to bring a few extra sockets just in case it can't hurt :-). Thanks!

Using colors, there can be a game of simon. The light flash a current color and the user (with a kinect, armband or ultrasonic senor [if it's allowed to be brought to the event]) can pick between a current interval of the color range depending how far the hand is away or movement. (using the color wheel). Other things can be added like two players or online multiplayer.
